The ACES Scholarships are prestigious awards given annually to undergraduates and graduate students aspiring to build careers in editing.
With a total of six scholarships awarded each year, including the Bill Walsh Scholarship specifically for news editing, these scholarships offer substantial financial support and opportunities for professional growth.
Benefits:
- Cash Awards: Individual scholarships with financial aid.
- Conference Attendance: Financial support to attend one of the two annual ACES conferences, either in-person or virtual.
- Additional Financial Support: Includes travel grants and other related benefits.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Application Deadline: November 15 at 11:59 p.m.
- Application Language: All materials must be submitted in English.
- Academic Standing: Open to college/university juniors, seniors, or graduate students.
- Previous Winners: Not eligible to reapply. ACES Board members, administrators, or their families are also ineligible.
Application Process:
- Prepare Documents: Combine the following into a single PDF file:
- Resume: Include academic achievements and work in editing.
- References: Names, titles, and contact information of three referees.
- Responses to Exercises:
- Student Resource Center Article: Summarize the key takeaway of a study on college problem drinking.
- City Communications Department: Create a headline for a volunteer recruitment post.
- Questions for Reporter: Develop questions based on a news story excerpt.
- Dream Job: Describe your dream job and steps taken to pursue it (500 words max).
- Email Application: Send your PDF file to lindsayaugustyn@aceseditors.org with “ACES scholarship” in the subject line. Name your file starting with your last name.
Scholarship Types:
- ACES Scholarships: Five awards for students committed to editing written materials.
- Bill Walsh Scholarship: For students aspiring to edit news.
Note: While you can apply for both the Walsh and ACES scholarships, you can only win one.
