Dr. Bawumia Refutes NDC Claims on Funding for District Road Improvement Project
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims made by some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament regarding their involvement in the purchase of equipment under the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP).
The project, which aims to enhance road infrastructure across Ghana, saw the government distributing excavators and other earthmoving machinery to various districts. Some NDC Members of Parliament had asserted that the initiative was funded through their allocations from the District Assemblies Common Fund.
However, during a speech at the Awubia Festival in Awutu Bereku, Dr. Bawumia clarified that Parliament had no role in the project's implementation. He emphasized that the idea originated from a committee he chaired, the Critical Roads Committee, which decided to procure the necessary equipment to facilitate road construction in every district.
Dr. Bawumia stated, "On that committee which I chaired, the critical roads committee, I came up with the idea that we should buy equipment to help every district construct roads in Ghana... This was an idea from my committee. It has nothing to do with Parliament." He further stressed that the project's funding and execution did not involve Parliament's approval, urging against any misinformation about parliamentary involvement.
This statement by Dr. Bawumia underscores his stance that the DRIP initiative was solely a product of his committee's work and was independent of parliamentary funding or approval processes.
