A former hotel driver in Rwanda, who is accused of complicity in the 1994 genocide, went on trial in Paris today.

Claude Muhayimana is accused of transporting Hutu militiamen who massacred hundreds of Tutsis — one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century.

He moved to France, tried and failed to obtain asylum but became a French citizen in 2010. Muhayimana now faces a life sentence if convicted.

After 10 years of proceedings and two postponements owing to the pandemic and restrictions on travel, around 50 witnesses are expected to be called, including 15 from Rwanda.

Is it justifiable for victims of serious crimes to have to wait for such a long time before they finally get justice?
