MTN Ghana Removes E-Levy on MoMo Transactions

MTN Ghana has officially removed the 1% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) on all mobile money (MoMo) transactions. The telecom company confirmed the development in a message to customers on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

This move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s approval of a new tax law on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, which repealed the E-Levy alongside the betting tax and emission tax. The decision aims to ease financial transactions for Ghanaians.

MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, had earlier addressed concerns regarding the timeline for removing the levy. Speaking at MTN House in Accra, he explained that while the government had approved the repeal, telecom operators had to follow regulatory procedures before stopping deductions. He noted that premature action without the Bank of Ghana’s authorization could lead to penalties.

With the latest announcement from MTN Ghana, MoMo users can now enjoy seamless transactions without E-Levy deductions, marking a significant financial relief for millions of Ghanaians.
