Uganda's Military Chief Muhoozi Kainerubaga Demands Apology from US Ambassador
Uganda’s Chief of General Staff, Muhoozi Kainerubaga, has issued a stern ultimatum to the US ambassador to Uganda, William Popp, demanding that he apologise to President Yoweri Museveni or leave the country by Monday. The demand, made on social media on Friday, has intensified diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
Kainerubaga, the son of President Museveni, accused Popp of "disrespecting our beloved and celebrated president and undermining the constitution of Uganda," according to reports from local Ugandan media. The military chief made it clear that the issue is of national importance, asserting that Uganda would not tolerate foreign domination.
"This is not a personal issue between me and the current US Ambassador; this is a national issue, and you’ll see that no foreign country will ever dominate Uganda again," Kainerubaga stated, reflecting strong nationalist sentiments.
Although Kainerubaga did not specify the ambassador’s alleged offenses, the demand follows the US government's decision earlier this week to sanction four Ugandan police officers for alleged human rights violations. The sanctions have likely fueled tensions between Uganda and the United States, with Kainerubaga's demands further escalating the situation.
As the deadline approaches, the Ugandan government’s next move and the response from the US ambassador remain to be seen, with the potential to further strain Uganda-US diplomatic relations.
